Bring questions that leave room for an answer.
Leave room for questions about your health
In its advice for doctors, the Federation of State Medical Boards rejects prescribing from a fixed form alone, without exploring the answers.
The advice checked September 26, 2026 keeps follow-up questions as part of the doctor’s assessment of your health.
A state’s laws and board rules carry legal force; the suggested standard is guidance for those boards.
Ask how the person reviewing your answers can contact you with more questions. Check how you can ask questions too.
Check the person and the place
HHS, the US health department, says two places matter for licensing: the health professional’s location and your location during care.
This licensing advice was checked on September 26, 2026; the permission needed depends on each state’s rules.
For an online visit, write down where you will be sitting. Ask which state licence or other permission lets the person treat you there.
For needed tests or examinations, the medical boards’ suggested standard tells doctors to carry them out, arrange them elsewhere, or direct you to another professional.
That suggested standard is advice for the boards, rather than a law applying across the country.
